Currently, the proposed Senate Bill SB179 removes parental notification and consent for minor abortions. This means a girl, under the age of 18, can go to an abortion provider to get an abortion without her parents ever being notified, without parental approval for the abortion, and without the provider ever telling the girl what the abortion can and will do to her body.

Informed consent allows a patient to know what risks are associated with a medical procedure.  Every patient deserves to be educated about potential complications and the risks associated with abortion. SB179 eliminates informed consent.

Eliminating parental notification from abortions is a way for human trafficking rings to flourish. According to a 2016 report by the National Human Trafficking Hotline, Las Vegas was ranked 6th out of US cities based on incoming reports of human trafficking. If a minor has been lured into a sex trafficking ring, she can be sexually exploited, become pregnant and be taken to an abortion provider for a forced abortion. Removing obvious protections for girls like informed consent and parental notification guarantees these girls will continue to be victimized by traffickers. SB179 allows criminals and crime rings to operate without consequence.
We need parental notification and informed consent on every medical procedure for minors. Parents have the right to know the medical history of their children to properly care and provide for them.
