Sex Ed Community Input Forums:

What - When - Where - Why - How?

WHAT: What are the sex ed community forums?
CCSD is hosting community forums throughout the valley to gain insight from a parental perspective on possible changes to the sex ed curriculum. CCSD staff members will attend a meeting held in each of their areas to hear the thoughts of the parents represent by that areas' trustee.

Notes from last week's meetings:
  • Open meeting law was not in effect - meaning that presenters and trustees can answer any questions you may have, so come prepared with questions!
  • Surveys and cards for written comment were distributed.
  • Open forum comments are limited to 60 seconds per person.
How to prepare for meetings:
  • Review the CCSD Sex ED survey and come prepared to get questions answered.
  • Read the AB230 Crosswalk document.  Research to understand the vocabulary and topics in the bold italics.  This is why CCSD is addressing sex ed.
  • Familiarize yourself with the linked documents on the CCSD website: http://ccsd.net/students/sex-ed-info.php
  • Understand these terms:
    • Standards and Objectives – The general concepts to be taught.
    • Curriculum – The materials used to teach the concepts.
    • Lesson Plan – Methods and procedures on how a teacher uses curriculum to present a concept.
**Note:  THERE CAN BE A HUGE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE TERMS.  Here is an example from 5th Grade Health:
- Objective:  (5)2.3 – Define puberty [1.5.3]: Curriculum and Lesson Plans (45 Pages):

WHY: Why should I be there?
Even if you've attended previous meetings, this meeting will hold the most weight, as trustees will be hearing your voice as the voice of the people they represent! It is important to have our highest level of representation at these meetings to ensure that we as parents are heard and represented accordingly.

HOW: How can I help?
In addition to attending the meeting in your area, you can help by mobilizing all parents in your community who desire to make their voices heard to come to the meeting with you! If you want to go the extra mile and help organize for Power2Parent, email us at power2parentnv@gmail.com!
